FallsFREE CheckUp is an annual community event that brings together the In-Patient Rehabilitation professionals of CHRISTUS St. Vincent and older adults from throughout Northern New Mexico for a day of education, assessment, and fun, and is FREE to the public. This unique event creates an opportunity for participants to connect directly with healthcare experts, government agencies, and community organizations dedicated to helping older adults remain active, independent, and safe.
Participants receive evidence-based fall risk screenings, including STEADI assessments, medication reviews, and consultations with audiologists, pharmacists, and physical therapists to identify factors that may increase their risk of falling. Each participant receives a personalized written evaluation that can be shared with their primary care provider to support informed conversations about their health and fall prevention strategies.
The event also features representatives from key local and state agencies, including New Mexico Aging and Long-Term Services, New Mexico Office of Superintendent of Insurance, CONNECT Santa Fe, Santa Fe County Senior Services, New Mexico Department of Health, city and county Fire and EMS departments, and others. These organizations provide valuable information and resources and create opportunities for community members to learn about programs and services available to support healthy aging.
Throughout the day, participants can enjoy interactive exercise demonstrations that showcase simple, enjoyable ways to improve strength, balance, and mobility. Educational presentations address many of the common causes of falls, including medication side effects, hearing and vision changes, improper footwear, dehydration, and environmental hazards. Attendees leave with practical strategies they can use immediately to reduce their risk of falls and maintain their independence.
FallsFREE CheckUp is more than a health screening event—it is a celebration of healthy aging, community connection, and the shared commitment of healthcare providers, government agencies, and community organizations to help older adults stay strong, steady, and engaged in life.
