Intrinsic capacity is quickly becoming an important new way to understand and assess healthy aging.

At Villages of Santa Fe, we are constantly seeking innovative ways to improve older adult health. Our goal is to better understand how addressing the whole person can help us remain healthy, active, and independent as we age.
Just this month, Villages began partnering with UNM’s Vive Bien/Live Well initiative to introduce its new app. Based on the World Health Organization’s ICOPE approach, the app assesses six areas of intrinsic capacity: cognition, mobility, nutrition, psychological well-being, vision, and hearing.
New Mexico is the first U.S. state implementing this innovative program. We’ll be learning alongside our participants and community partners: Is the tool useful and accessible? What barriers exist? Can it complement fall prevention programs such as Otago? And most importantly, can understanding what our bodies and minds are capable of help us live healthier, more independent lives?
