New Mexico Adult Falls Prevention Coalition Meeting August 21, 2027

The quarterly meeting of the New Mexico Adult Falls Prevention Coalition focused on fall prevention strategies, resources, and training opportunities. Ann Church and Cynthia LaCoe-Maniaci co-chaired the session, discussing their roles and recent activities, including a gubernatorial proclamation for Fall Prevention Awareness Week. Ann presented on hosting fall prevention workshops, emphasizing the importance of partnerships, marketing, and relatable content. Cynthia outlined available evidence-based programs like Matter of Balance, Otago, and Tai Chi, detailing their structures and the support available for instructors through Oasis and the Department of Health. Helen Wakefield from the Department of Health provided updates on the limited budget for fall prevention efforts, the upcoming launch of a revised Paths to Health website, and a new data dashboard. The meeting also covered resources from NCOA, the need for community engagement, and the challenge of transitioning from training to consistently offering classes. The group highlighted the value of mentorship and collaboration to expand fall prevention programming across the state.

Why Join the New Mexico Adult Falls Prevention Coalition? Falls are everyone’s business—and preventing them takes all of us working together. The New Mexico Adult Falls Prevention Coalition (NMAFPC) brings together people and organizations committed to reducing falls, preventing injuries, and helping older adults remain safe, active, and independent.

By joining the Coalition, you become part of a statewide network of health professionals, community organizations, first responders, senior services, tribal programs, exercise and wellness leaders, researchers, and others who share a commitment to fall prevention. Membership connects you with training opportunities, evidence-based programs, practical resources, current research, community events, and potential partners.

Whether you want to bring a fall-prevention program to your community, find qualified instructors, host a FallsFREE CheckUp, strengthen an existing program, or simply learn what others are doing across New Mexico, the Coalition can help. Just as important, members learn from one another. The Coalition provides a place to share successes, identify gaps, build partnerships, and find solutions—particularly for rural and underserved communities where resources may be limited. Be a Fall Prevention Champion!

You don't need to be a fall-prevention expert. If you work with or care about the health and independence of New Mexico adults, you have a place in NMAFPC.

Join us. Connect. Learn. Collaborate. Together, we can prevent falls before they happen.
